Water Distillation vs Reverse Osmosis

Why I Only Drink Distilled Water

What distillation actually does

Distillation is water purification that's been demonized without much education around what it actually is. Here's the process, step by step — it's the same one water follows in nature.

The natural water cycle compared to how a water distiller works: evaporation, condensation, precipitation
Step one

Boil

Water heats in a sealed tank until it turns to vapor. Chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and most contaminants get left behind.

Step two

Condense

The vapor rises and cools back into liquid — the same way clouds form rain. Distilled water is basically rainwater, minus whatever it picks up in the air.

Step three

Collect

What's left is water stripped of the bad stuff — including a lot that reverse osmosis systems just don't catch.

Step four

Remineralize

Distillation removes the good with the bad. That's where minerals get added back in on purpose, before you drink it — more on that below.

What it removes

Removal rates of distillation versus reverse osmosis and carbon filtration across contaminants including arsenic, bacteria, chlorine, fluoride, lead, mercury, nitrates, pesticides, PFAS, and more Distillation removes 99.9% of nitrates from drinking water

Putting the good stuff back

Once the bad is gone, so is the good — including minerals your body actually needs. I add different minerals and salt back into my water, and I keep it moving to structure it.

Distillation vs Reverse Osmosis

Chart showing distillation purity holding steady over time, while reverse osmosis and carbon filters decline until replaced
Distiller — upfront cost~$800, one time
Reverse osmosis — upfront cost~$300
Reverse osmosis — filters~$150, 2x/year

Run the math out and the distiller pays for itself in about 18 months. After that, it's free.

Cheaper options exist

There are less expensive water distillers on Amazon. I haven't personally used them. It is worth looking into if you want to try a cheaper option.

Distillation plus remineralization. That's it.

It's the simplest way I've found to control exactly what's in my water — remove everything, then choose what goes back in.
